J.M.Steele Bio
Born and raised in La Jolla, CA. Jeanne Marie Steele has lived and traveled throughout the West, focusing her work on Western themes, Animal paintings and Landscapes. Steele studied for 4 years under the tutelage of internationally renowned painter Sebastian Capella, and San Diego animal artist Perrietta Hester. She has also taken workshops with Wolf Kahn.
Steele uses numerous layers of paint on canvas and wood panels, often enhanced by a high varnish finish. Much of her work evokes a richness reminiscent of an ‘old world ‘ era. "I try to incorporate a luminous inner glow in each painting,” Steele states. “I want my work to appeal to the viewer’s emotions and memories, leaving some of the painting unexplained, just as life is.”
Steele now resides in Gold Beach, Oregon with her artist husband, and captures the land & seascapes of the Oregon coast and continues to travel throughout the American West, painting and gathering further inspiration. She has exhibited in many group and one person shows and has received numerous awards. She is an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America.
Her oil and acrylic paintings portray a variety of Western subject matter that she finds inspiring and exciting.

J.M.Steele & Tod C Steele 'STEELE & STEELE FINE ART'
J.M. Steele and Tod C. Steele are professional artists who live on the southern Oregon coast. They have teamed up to create a collaborative style of painting. The images are bold and colorful iconic animals and Western themes painted in acrylic on canvas.
The unique part is that they work side by side, painting on the canvas at the same time. They use their hands to paint
with, as well as brushes and texturing tools for finishing touches.
The outcome for this husband & wife team is an exciting Western contemporary style that captures the spirit of both artists, and conveys their love of animals and the West.

Tod C. Steele Bio
For lack of a better term, I sometimes call my painting style, 'Expressionistic Moomoo-ism', which is basically 'the joyous portrayal of cows and other creatures'. As an artist I'm excited by shape, form, color and using lots of paint to create texture and depth, plus I always try to choose subjects that bring me joy...and few things bring me more joy than animals.
While painting I work spontaneously and with as much energy and liveliness as I can muster...and my sincere hope is that the viewer can share in some of this merriment as well. My personal philosophy in painting is: 'make 'em laugh...or at least smile a bit'. With all the stress in the world, I want to produce paintings that help bring a bit of cheer. If I can do that, I'm delighted!
As a young man I took courses in Animal Husbandry and was often amazed at how much personality and intelligence many of the animals had. Ever since then they have fascinated me, and so it was natural for me to paint them once I ventured into an art career. I believe that animals help make us more human. They can connect us to the Divine by their stillness, genuineness, and in many cases, by their unconditional love, and I am honored to celebrate their wonder in some small way.
I was born in La Jolla, California, in 1955 and started painting on my 49th birthday. I live in Gold Beach, Oregon, with my wife, professional artist J.M. Steele, who I initially studied with, and who greatly inspires me still. Van Gogh, Gauguin and Georges Rouault are just a few of the old masters who have also been great inspirations along the way. A few modern artists I find inspiration in are Peggi Kroll-Roberts, Michael Sowa and Will Bullas.
PS....Regarding the art I sell on this website...A very important goal of mine is to make my art available at an extremely reasonable price, thus making it affordable to virtually anyone who wants my paintings. I use the finest materials, whether it's a study on hard-board or on canvas, thus the work, with minimal care, will last a lifetime or more.
Tod's Bio from an Alternate Universe
I was born in a stalled boxcar near Caspar, Wyoming on a cold January morning. As I grew while traveling the country by rail, I came to appreciate the beauty that I saw out of those boxcar doors. As a child I loved Art....in fact, I virtually worshipped Art. Art was my father. All through my early years you could usually find a sketch pad and pencil glued to my hands (my father loved playing tricks on me with glue). Finally, I wearied of the hobo life, so I jumped train and found work slopping hogs for Old Farmer Grimly of Breakwind Nob, Oklahoma. It was there that I discovered the beauty of the common barnyard animal and learned some of their mysterious ways. They took me in as their own and taught me the cunning wiles of the cackling goose and the meaning of the contented grunting of the snoozing sow. But my favorite of all were the cows. What dear friends, the cows. They fed me, gave me drink, kept me warm and eventually taught me how to paint. For years I was the guy who painted the black spots on Holsteins...look it up! But very few know that when I was bored I sometimes turned them into Herefords by painting their spots orange. This freaked them out, but it was all in good fun and thus the years happily flew by. Finally, my apprenticeship came to an end, and the beloved creatures sent me out into the world, saying, "Now, my child, use paint to show Humanity what we're really like...we have soul...we have humor, we are so much more than ground beef and methane". So, dear reader, if I can pass on just a bit of the joy I find in our beloved four-legged friends, and if I can make you smile at least a tad, then I consider my job well done...and that's the truth!
